A brief review of the dynamics of tropical lows that form during the Australian monsoon will be presented. The formation will be illustrated by a case that occurred in January 2015 over Western Australia. The structure and evolution of this low will be examined using European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts analyses together with a regional, cloud-permitting simulation using the Bureau of Meteorology's ACCESS model. It will be shown that such lows have characteristics similar to those of tropical cyclones.
