Single column models (SCM) are useful tools in the evaluation and development of physical parameterisation in GCMs. The objective of this project is to develop a testbed using SCM to facilitate systematic testing and improvement of convective parameterisation across different research teams. Ideally, the proposed setup shall allow errors in convective parameterisation to be isolated. The eventual goal is to propose new or improved convective schemes that could be incorporated in GCM parameterisations. A particular focus is on diagnosing and improving the representation of "memory" in convective schemes. We will describe the goals, preliminary results and future plans using this testbed to explore and improve the behaviour of convective and related model parameterizations.
